Selected reading

Three focused guides.

Choose one question, try the suggested method and keep notes on what changes.

01

Urban sketching

Begin with three large shapes

Give yourself ten minutes for the skyline, the street and one foreground form. Work from big relationships to details; a convincing sketch can survive a crooked window but rarely a misplaced horizon.

Urban sketching

Use limited tools well

A pencil, waterproof pen and one colour can be enough. Test marks on a spare page before drawing on location, and keep your kit compact so setup does not consume the session.

03

Urban sketching

Keep the place legible

Add the date, general location and one observed detail in words. These notes make a modest drawing more useful later, especially when light and traffic conditions change before you can finish.
